Katherine created serigraphs from 1976 to around 1989. She would begin with a detailed sketch of the idea. Initially, she used the hand-cut stencil process of creating her serigraphs which involved cutting out a stencil from plastic or paper, adhering it to a silk screen, and printing ink through the hole in the stencil. One stencil was needed for each color. She would print color upon color until the image was done. Katherine was self-taught in this medium and later began to paint through the hole in the stencil as well as paint and draw upon the finished serigraph.
She enjoyed working from her imagination, unassisted by photographs, projectors or models. As this original art depicts, she delighted in expressing her own inner sense of harmony in a joyful and romantic style.
A serigraph is an original print or multiple-original, such as an etching, and is not a reproduction. Each serigraph can have subtle and/or intentional differences and are all numbered and limited in the edition.
